Network

Version 1.0, in force since 1 Mar 2026 · 9 rules that must be met

  • 9VLANs by purpose
  • 2Uplinks per switch
  • 10 Gb/sLeast uplink speed
  • 0Devices on VLAN 1

The must rules

9 rules every install follows, in the order of this page. 2 more rules are the default with a written exception.

Every office's network looks the same, so a technician who knows one knows them all. Devices go on the VLAN for their purpose, not the VLAN of the room they are in. The IT network is UniFi (comms rooms, gateway, Wi-Fi and home offices); the in-room AV switch stays Netgear AV Line, because it is tested and set up for Dante and Q-SYS.

  2. Addresses, names and time
  3. PoE and uplinks

VLANs by purpose

4 rules

A device goes on the VLAN for what it is. Rules between VLANs live in the firewall, so a room device can reach its cloud service without reaching a laptop.

Subnets are set per site from the address plan. VLAN 1 carries nothing.

MustHouse choice

Put every device on the VLAN for its purpose from the VLAN plan, set on the switch port or the Wi-Fi network, never on the device itself.

Why
The firewall rules and monitoring are written per VLAN, so a device on the wrong one is either blocked or too exposed.
How to check
The switch port's native VLAN matches the plan for the device recorded on that port in Keia Atlas.

Source IEEE 802.1Q, Creating Virtual Networks (VLANs)

MustHouse choice

Leave VLAN 1 unused, and shut down or park unused switch ports on an empty VLAN.

Why
VLAN 1 is every switch's default, so anything plugged in by accident lands on it.
How to check
No active port has VLAN 1 as its native VLAN; unused ports are disabled.
MustHouse choice

Keep the AV VLAN (Dante, Q-SYS, AV over IP) on the in-room AV switch with its own IGMP querier, and do not route it.

Why
AV multicast floods a network that is not set up for it; keeping it in the room keeps the office network quiet and the audio clean.
How to check
The AV switch's uplink does not carry VLAN 40; the room's audio runs with the uplink unplugged.

Source Netgear M4250 AV Line user manual

ShouldHouse choice

Authenticate staff desk ports with 802.1X, and room device ports by MAC address against the device's record.

Why
A port in a meeting room is in a public place; authentication stops a stranger's laptop joining the room systems VLAN.
How to check
Plug in an unknown laptop at a room device port; it gets no address.

Addresses, names and time

3 rules
MustHouse choice

Give every fixed device its address by a DHCP reservation, not by typing a static address on the device.

Why
The address can change centrally without a site visit, and the reservation proves the MAC address in the record is right.
How to check
The device shows DHCP on; the reservation's MAC address matches Keia Atlas.
MustHouse choice

Name every device site-room-prefix and number, for example dub-321-sw01: the site code, the room number without its dot, the device class's prefix and its number in the room.

Why
One name finds the device in DNS, device management, monitoring and Keia Atlas.
How to check
Forward and reverse DNS resolve the name; the same name is in every system.
MustHouse choice

Point every device at the site's NTP servers (handed out by DHCP), and set its time zone to the site's.

Why
Logs line up only when clocks agree, and schedules (display timers, updates) run at the right hour.
How to check
The device's clock is within a second of the NTP server.
