Signage

Version 1.0, in force since 29 Sept 2026 · 8 rules that must be met

  • 1,500 mmCentre of the screen
  • 24/7Rated display
  • 1Content platform
  • HDMI 1Fixed input

The must rules

8 rules every install follows, in the order of this page. 3 more rules are the default with a written exception.

A signage point is two devices: a commercial display, set up by the displays standard, and a signage player, managed in BSN.cloud. This standard covers what is different about signage: where it goes, how the player is fitted, and how content and schedules are run.

  2. The player
  3. Content and schedules

Where it goes

4 rules
MustHouse choice

Mount landscape signage with the centre of the screen about 1,500 mm above the floor, where people stand or queue, facing the way they walk.

Why
That is standing eye height, so people read it without looking up; it is placed where they pause, not where they hurry past.
How to check
Measure from the finished floor to the centre of the screen.
Must

In corridors and lobbies, keep the display and mount within 100 mm of the wall (see the displays standard).

Why
A screen sticking out at head height is not found with a cane.
How to check
Measure the depth from the wall.

ShouldHouse choice

Do not place a 500 nit display facing a window or in direct sun; where it must go there, raise an exception for a high brightness model.

Why
The house displays wash out in daylight, and a signage screen nobody can read is wasted.
How to check
Look at the screen at midday before handover.
ShouldHouse choice

Mount a display in portrait only if its manufacturer's manual allows portrait use, and turn it so the ports are where the manual says.

Why
Some displays overheat or void their warranty in portrait, or in the wrong direction.
How to check
The page of the manual that allows portrait is in the handover pack.

The player

3 rules
MustHouse choice

Fix the signage player behind the display on the mount or in the recessed box, powered by PoE+ from its data outlet, with a short HDMI lead to HDMI 1.

Why
Nothing hangs below the screen, and the player can be restarted from the switch.
How to check
Photo behind the display before it is hung; the switch shows the player drawing PoE.

MustHouse choice

Put the player and the display on the Displays and signage VLAN (31), each with its own reservation and hostname (site-room-sig and dsp numbers).

Why
Both can be managed and monitored, and their names match on the floor plan.
How to check
Both answer on their reserved addresses.
MustHouse choice

Register the player in BSN.cloud before it leaves the bench, set up by its configuration.

Why
Content, schedules and health come from one place, and a replaced player picks up its content without a visit.
How to check
The player is online in BSN.cloud in the site's group.

Content and schedules

4 rules
MustHouse choice

Turn the display on and off with its own timers (office hours), and let the player's schedule follow the same hours.

Why
The display is off overnight and at weekends, which is most of the week.
How to check
The display's timers match the office's hours.
MustHouse choice

Fix the display's input to HDMI 1 and turn CEC and automatic input switching off.

Why
A signage screen must never switch to a blank input.
How to check
Unplug and replug the player; the display stays on HDMI 1.
ShouldHouse choice

Keep a default playlist on the player that shows when scheduled content is missing.

Why
A black screen in reception looks broken.
How to check
Remove the scheduled content in a test; the default playlist plays.
MustHouse choice

Show only approved company content, never personal data, meeting names or anything people could not see from the street.

Why
Reception screens are seen by visitors and passers-by.
How to check
Content owners sign off each playlist in BSN.cloud.
